Strong Women – Strong roots

To mark the International Year of the Female Farmer, we have opened a special showcase in collaboration with the Südtiroler Bäuerinnenorganisation. It tells of everyday challenges, growing responsibilities, and the creativity needed to keep everything under one roof.

The display makes visible what women farmers have been accomplishing for centuries: they take responsibility for the farm, the family, animals, and nature; they plough, sow, harvest, and process. They are often the silent “supporting pillars” of the farm – doing physical, emotional, and organizational work that largely remains invisible.

At the official opening on 5 March 2026, museum director Julia Aufderklamm emphasized how important it is to finally acknowledge this burden and achievement publicly. The evening was characterized by female solidarity, recognition, and exchange.

The museum thus becomes a space of resonance for experiences that have long been overlooked – and invites visitors to challenge clichés and discover new perspectives on women in agriculture.

The International Year of the Female Farmer 2026 (also “International Year of Women in Agriculture”) is a UN initiative that aims to highlight and honour the diverse contributions of women in agriculture worldwide – as farmers, entrepreneurs, mothers, and innovators.

The United Nations officially declared 2026 as this year to shed light on the often underestimated role of women in food security, rural development, and farm success. The aim is to recognize their many talents (for example as key workers, leaders, or creators of new business branches), to combat structural disadvantages (such as in farm succession or leadership positions), and to promote better framework conditions.
